Opportunities for some

There’s an upside to the nation’s housing glut, fed by the crush of foreclosures: Housing gets more affordable.

More than 2.3 million homes went into foreclosure last year. There were 290,000 filings in February alone, up 6% from January.

The number of homes for sale in 2007 soared to 10 million but inched back to 9.4 million in 2008, as construction of new homes slowed and prices sank, Lucy says. That’s still almost 40% higher than 10 years earlier, when fewer than 7 million homes were for sale.

Sales of existing homes rose 5.1% to 4.72 million from January to February – the largest sales jump since July 2003, the National Association of Realtors reports.

Festival of Lights At Winterhaven

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

For a few weeks in December, the Winterhaven neighborhood becomes a holiday gift that Tucsonans have relished for nearly 60 years. Residents illuminate their properties, pipe in music, and spread the spirit with elaborate holiday decorations. The city pitches in by lighting the huge trees lining the streets, and several companies provide hayrides through the neighborhood. You can also walk through or, on specific nights, drive. It runs dusk-10 p.m. every night December 13-27. Winterhaven is bounded by Tucson Boulevard and Country Club, Prince, and Fort Lowell Roads. Visit www.winterhavenfestival.org.

Winterhaven Public Events is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to raise and distribute funds to charities such as the Community Food Bank.  Dollars are raised primarily through two events:  The Festival of Lights and the 4th of July Parade. The 2007 Festival brought in over 22,000 pounds of food and $22,000 to the Food Bank.

Through a partnership with Tucson Electric Power (TEP), The 2008 Festival of Lights has gone green!Last year Winterhaven replaced 300 strands of traditional bulbs with new energy-efficient Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights. The new 0.1-watt lights require much less energy than the old 7-watt bulbs, reducing energy consumption by more than 98 percent. In addition to reducing Winterhaven’s electric bills during the festival, the upgrade will avert the need for energy production that would release more than 30,000 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere
